Thought the sound was the fridge
or the pipes or someone
knocking at my door
I went outside to look around
and there they were
red, black and white
flipping woodpeckers
pecking the roof
So I stomped and yelled
and quickly they fled
up to the birches above my head
My dog Percy and I left for our walk
along the path around the school
Cold but bright
vivid colors displayed
in spring time light
I notice sparrows on the fence
chittering and chirping amd jumping ahead
like the thoughts that are singing
inside my head
I see pesky gray grackles
and robins so proud
and swallows that swirl
and shadow the ground
Wow, wow, wow
I think as I spin
So many birds here
where have I been!
Birds in the maples
birds in the pines
birds in the cottonwoods
birds on the vines
Birds in the light where
no shadows are found
some that are rising
and some diving down
there in the whispers
made by the wind
there in my memories
drifting within
Coming in waves
they fly without care
In my breath they sing
hymns to the air
Birds in my longing
Birds in my love
like the gray dove calling
from the streetlamp above
Dearest two-legged
on the path that you take
We love to follow
the dreams that you make
We fly in trust to always remind
of our faith in the sky
and the joy that we find
as we rise and we soar
in the lifting of wind
and give thanks for the days
we are living in
We see you today
and we know that you fear
We see you now
and here is our say
Everything given
Everything here
Everything given
Everything here
We see your heart
and the songs that you sing
and the way the air moves
from the love that you bring
And when you look up
and when you come near
please find hope
in the trusting of here
Come two-legged
there on the path
Come in friendship
Come in fear
Come in recollection
of the kindness here
Coo, Coo… Coo, Coo..
Oh hear us sing
Birds in the cottonwoods
Birds in the rye
Lit bright from the Love
that holds up the sky!
